Xu Ran is the founder of Rythan IP. He previously served as General Manager of the Corporate Business Development & IP Strategy Department and General Manager of the Investor Relations & Capital Markets Department at Xiaomi Group. He is an IP-strategy expert and executive who combines a background in communications-technology R&D, global patent-licensing experience, and the ability to commercialize technology assets.
Xu Ran earned his bachelor’s degree in Information Engineering from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, and his PhD in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from the University of Bristol (UK). Early in his career, he worked on communications-chip R&D at technology companies including Cambridge Silicon Radio (UK) and Samsung Electronics, developing a solid, first-principles command of the underlying technology.
In late 2013, Xu Ran returned to China to join the IP operating company Zhigu Invention, where he is the inventor of more than one hundred granted patents. In 2016, after Xiaomi wholly acquired Zhigu Invention, he joined Xiaomi’s IP strategy team and progressively took charge of core functions including global patent licensing, patent acquisition, and IP strategic cooperation. During his tenure at Xiaomi, he led multiple major global patent collaborations, reaching key cross-licensing agreements with Qualcomm, Nokia, Ericsson, Huawei, and others, with cumulative transaction value reaching several billion U.S. dollars.
As a versatile expert and executive with experience spanning technology R&D, patent invention, patent licensing, and IP strategy at a major technology company, Xu Ran founded Rythan IP to help technology companies, industrial capital, and innovation teams turn patents and technical capabilities into strategic assets that are identifiable, priceable, tradable, and partnership-ready.
